Spray Gun Guide

Choosing the right spray gun is the foundation of a successful paint job

What spray guns are there?

Automotive spray guns are divided into three main types. The choice depends on experience level, budget, and compressor.

HVLP Guns

(High Volume Low Pressure)

Best choice for beginners and hobbyists. High transfer efficiency (~65%), less overspray waste. Requires larger compressor (250+ l/min).

Nozzle 1.3-1.4mm for basecoat, 1.5-1.8mm for primer and clearcoat
Pressure 1.5-2.5 bar at the nozzle
Beginners and hobbyists

LVLP Guns

(Low Volume Low Pressure)

Professional results with lower air pressure. Excellent surface texture control. Works with smaller compressors (200+ l/min).

Nozzle 1.3-1.4mm for basecoat, 1.5-1.7mm for primer
Pressure 0.7-1.5 bar at the nozzle
Advanced hobbyists and professionals

Conventional High Pressure

(Conventional / High Pressure)

Older technology, high pressure. Fast but high waste (~35% material lost). Rarely recommended today.

Nozzle 1.4-1.8mm
Pressure 3-4 bar
Professionals in large spaces

Nozzle sizes by application

1.0-1.2mmTouch-up paint, thin materials
1.3-1.4mmBasecoat (WBC/metallic), clearcoat
1.5-1.7mmPrimer, filler, thicker materials
